St. Marys Insurance last unbeaten in softball action

In a battle of early season unbeatens, St. Marys Insurance can now claim the title of the last undefeated team standing, knocking off previously unbeaten Carlson Technologies 17-4 in action Tuesday night at the Robin Road Extension Softball Complex.

In the second game Tuesday evening, Pa Powdered Metals pulled off a minor upset, defeating Tyler Landscape 8-7.

SMI (3-0) put together an eight run third inning to put their game with CTI out of reach and pick up the win in five innings. Kenny Vogt hit a two-run homerun to highlight the outburst.

Vogt finished the night 2 for 3 with the homerun and a triple and knocked in 6 RBI’s total. Rudy Gleixner was 3 for 3 with a triple and 3 RBI’s. Ben Cortina wound up 3 for 4 with a triple and 4 RBI’s.

Steve Simchick was 2 for 2 for CTI (2-1), Mike Miraglia hit a solo homerun and Brett Herzing had a two-run single in the losing effort.

PPM scored three times in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead and then held on in the seventh to knock off Tyler. Jared Groll led off the inning with a single and scored on a Danny Singer double. Cory Huff then hit a two-run homerun to account for the scoring in the inning.

Choie Schaffer doubled with one out in the seventh for Tyler. Jordan Weinzierl singled, scoring Schaffer and putting runners on first and second with one out and the Landscapers trailing by one. Two fly outs later, Tyler came up a run short.

Huff was a perfect 3 for 3 offensively for PPM (2-1), hitting a double and a homerun with 2 RBI’s. Singer added a 2 for 3 effort that included a double.

Leading Tyler (1-2) was Weinzierl’s 2 for 3 night with a double. Andy Glass added a double and Nate Hoffman had a pair of hits.

In action Monday night, the Allegheny Coatings Goats made easy work of N&S Contractors, knocking them off 16-2 in five innings, and the Buttonwood/East End Beverage Honkey Spuds blew a big lead in the sixth inning, only to score three times in the top of the seventh to pick up a 15-12 win over winless Deprators Beverage.

The Goats scored at least two runs in each of the four innings that they batted, putting up five in the second and six in the fourth to end the game in five innings.

N&S scored both of their runs in the top of the third inning.

For the Goats (2-1), Chubby Jacobs went 3 for 3 with a triple and a double and knocked in 4 RBI’s to lead the team. His brother, Joe Jacob, also went 3 for 3 and contributed a pair of RBI’s. Six other Goats had two hits each as Allegheny Coatings totalled 20 hits in all.

For N&S (1-2), Rod Anderson and Frank Lecker both picked up an RBI in the third inning for the Contractors. Lecker and Jason Gnan both were 2 for 2 at the plate for the losers.

The Honkey Spuds (2-1) jumped out to a 12-4 lead after five innings of play, scoring five times in the first inning and six times in the third inning. Dave Burgett’s two-run double in the third and a base clearing double by Jamer Cooney in the third were the big hits in the inning.

Brennen Klahuwn led off the sixth with a single for Deprators (0-4), one of the six they would hit in the inning. RBI doubles by Bryce O’Leary and Colin O’Leary helped Beverage tie the game.

Matt Kriner’s two-run double in the top of the seventh helped the Honkey Spuds salvage the 15-12 win.

For the Buttonwood/East End Beverage, Zack Austin tripled, Garrett Hornung, Kriner and Cooney all doubled.

Deprators was led by Tyler Wehler’s 4 for 5 performance at the dish. Nate Dezanet added a 3 for 4 night offensively and Brady Schneider pitched in with a 2 for 3 night.
