Defending league champions, St. Marys Insurance, and upstart Carlson Technologies made it through week one of the 2020 St. Marys Men’s Softball League schedule unscathed at 2-0 following victories Wednesday and Friday nights, respectively, in games held at the Robin Road Extension Softball Complex.
SMI started off Wednesday night with a 13-1 win over Deprators Beverage. In the nightcap, N & S Contractors turned back PA Powdered Metals 11-8.
After going scoreless the first two inning, the Insurancemen were able to plate a run in third on Nathan Liggett’s solo homerun and another in the fourth on another solo homerun by Kenny Vogt.
Nathan Liggett led St. Marys Insurance, hitting a homerun and double.
In the fifth, SMI erupted for nine runs to put the game away. Back to back singles by Kurt Eckert and Ben Cortina led off the inning. Following a walk Jeremy Williams, an infield error scored a pair of runs, Kyle Garner drove in three runs with a hit and Vogt and Jake Cortina added RBI singles to account for the scoring.
Leading SMI (2-0) at the plate was Liggett, who homered and doubled, knocking in three runs. Vogt and Ben Cortina both finished 2 for 3 with 2 RBI each for the winners.
Alec Wehler drove in the lone run for Deprators with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
In the second game Wednesday, N & S Contractor rallied late to secure their win over Pa Powdered Metals.
Trailing 8-4 heading to the seventh, N & S rallied with seven runs to pull out the win.
Offensively for N & S, TJ Gornati homered, Hog Hoffman went 2 for 2, Scott Johnson 3 for 3 and Frank was 3 for 4 with a double and a homerun.
Thursday night saw just one game get in before mother nature erupted, with the Allegheny Coatings Goats getting past the Buttonwood/East End Beverage Honkey Spuds 11-6.
The Goats were comfortably in front from the start, scoring in every inning except the second and then withstanding a mini-rally from the Spuds, who plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh, to secure their first win of the season.
For the Goats (1-1), Keven Hoy had the hot bat, going 3 for 3 with a pair of dingers and knocking in four runs. Ricky Pearsall finished 3 for 4 with a triple, Ryan Grimm 2 for 3 with a double and Hank Cappiello was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.
For the Spuds (1-1), Zack Austin was 2 for 3 with an RBI double, Zip McKimm doubled and Ken Meyer, Bob Fisher and Garrett Hornung all added RBI singles.
Zip McKimm slides safely into second after hitting a double to right field.
On Friday night, Carlson Technologies beat Deprators Beverage 10-8 and PA Powdered Metals got past Eckert Technical Services 8-5.
Carlson’s (2-0) jumped out to a 10-3 lead after four innings, then withstood a five run seventh by Deprators to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Mike Miraglia was perfect at the dish for Carlson’s, going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Steve Simchick was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and 2 RBI’s. Brandon Tyger, Travis Menteer, Nick Dattoli all doubled for the winners.
Deprators (0-2) was led by Gavin Elmquist’s 2 for 3 performance at the plate. Also collecting a pair of hits in the losing effort were Tyler Wehler and Nate Dezanet.
Pa Powdered Metals jumped out to a 6-0 lead, saw ETS score five times in the bottom in the fourth to cut the lead to one, 6-5, then added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.
Luke Hoffman led PPM (1-1), going 3 for 3. Ross Brennen was 3 for 4 and Jack Herzing and Cory Huff both added doubles for the winners.
Mitchell Struble went 3 for 3 to ETS (1-1). Zach Reigel was 2 for 2 and Tyler Donachy added a double.
