St. Marys – Elk County Tool & Die swept their to the 2024 St. Marys Mens Softball League title last week, finishing off two-time defending champions, Allegheny Coatings, 3-0 in action at the Robin Road Sports Complex.
ECTD swept both of their first two series and completed the perfect postseason by winning three straight against the Goats, finishing 7-0 during the playoffs.
Overall, Elk County Tool & Die was 29-4 on the year.
ECTD, who only trailed for one inning in the championship series, won game one 11-6, game two 19-4 in five innings, and completing the sweep with a 25-13 win in six innings, to outscore the Goats 55-23.
ECTD jumped out to 11-0 lead after five innings, scoring three in the first, two in the fourth and six in the fifth. The Goats managed two runs in the bottom of the fifth and tried to make it interesting in the seventh, scoring four, but would fall short.
Nate Hall and Danny Singer smacked back to back homeruns in the first, with Hall’s two-run dinger. Ty Donachy hit a two run shot in the fourth and added a three run round tripper in the fifth. Nick Reuscher also hit a solo homer in the fifth.
For the Goats, Justin Quiggle smacked a three run homer and Nick Brennen added a two run blast.
In game two on Tuesday night, the Goats scored first in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead and lead 2-1 to start the bottom of the third. That’s when the ECTD bats started to get hot, as they plated six in the third, three in the fifth and nine to finish off the game in the fifth. The nine run fifth featured a three run walkoff homer from Donachy.
Jared Groll hit a three run homer, Kyler Lenox a two run shot, Rudy Gleixner a three run blast, Hall a two run dinger, and for their fifth of the game, Donachy with the walkoff.
The Goats were led by a pair of solo homers by Andy Eck and a solo blast by Kevin Hoy.
Wednesday night looked like the two teams would shoot it out, combining for 17 runs in the first inning.
ECTD opened up the game plating ten run in the top of the first. The first eight batters ECTD sent to the plate got a hit, including homeruns by Hall and Donachy. Gleixner added the final touch to the outburst with a two run homerun to make it 10-0.
For the first time in the series, the Goats looked like they were ready to play, as the first seven batter reached base and scored. Hoy and Brennen both hit homeruns in the inning, Hoy a two run dinger and Brennen’s the three run variety.
But that would be the only outburst of the series for Allegheny Coatings, as they would only score six more runs in the game, with three of the six coming in the bottom of the sixth when it was too little too late.
ECTD meanwhile put the game away with an 11 spot in the top of the sixth. An RBI triple by Andy Glass and a Donachy two run homer highlighted the inning. In all, ECTD sent 15 batters to the plate, collecting 12 hits that included 7 in a row at one point.
