And then there were four; Mens softball start semi-finals

The St. Marys Mens Softball League is down to the final four teams, as the semi-finals started Thursday night at the Robin Road Sports Complex.

All four of the top seeds advanced to the semi-finals as top-seeded St. Marys Insurances dispatched PA Powdered Metals 2-0 to advance to take on Allegheny Coatings, the fourth seed, who knocked out Tyler Landscape 2-0.

Third-seeded Deprators Beverage also advanced by sweeping Tubby’s Tavern 2-0.

The only first round to series to go the maximum three games was between second seeded Eckert Technical Services and seventh seeded Carlson Technologies. In the rubber match, ETS rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 6-5 and move on in the playoff.

The schedule for the semi-finals is as follows:

Tuesday night: 5:30 pm – Allegheny Coatings vs. St. Marys Insurance (if needed), 6:30 pm – Eckert Technical Services vs. Deprators Beverage.

Wednesday night – 5:30 pm – Deprators Beverage vs. Eckert Technical Services, and/or the start of the best of five series finals.

One semi-final game was played last week on Thursday night between St. Marys Insurance and the Allegheny Coatings Goats, with the Goats getting the best of the Insurancemen 18-13 to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.

Allegheny Coatings got a huge game from Kevin Hoy, who went 3 for 5 with a pair of long balls, a double, and 7 RBI. Justin Quiggle also had a nice evening, going 3 for 5 with a dinger, double and 4 RBI. Nick Brennen added a 4 for 5 performance that included a homerun and 3 RBI.

SMI was led by Jeremy Williams who smashed a pair of homers. Rudy Gleixner, TJ Breindel and Lucas Wendel all went deep as well.

SMI got to the semi’s by virtue of a pair shutouts of PPM, 15-0 and 7-0.

Deprators Beverage beat Tubby’s Tavern 11-10 and 7-3 to advance.

ETS lost game one to CTI 24-10, then rebounded with an 11-4 win before rallying to win game three 6-5.

CTI jumped out to an early lead 4-1 lead thanks to a two-run homer from Mike Miraglia, an RBI triple from Eric Herzing, who then scored on an RBI single by his brother, Bret Herzing. ETS would rally though, with the big blow a two-run by Jared Groll and win 6-5 to move on and meet Deprators in the semi-finals.

Deprators and Tubby’s played an exciting game in their opening, won by Deprators in walkoff fashion. With the game tied at 10 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Zack Zameroski led off with a single. Matt Bellina also singled to put runners on first and third. An intentional walk to Nate Dezanet loaded the bases to setting up a force play at home for Tubby’s. Brennen Klawuhn had other ideas, hitting a fly ball deep enough to score Zameroski with the winning run.

Tubby’s led early 10-6 thanks to a four run third inning and a sixth run fourth inning. Nate Ball’s two-run triple was the highlight of the third inning. In the fourth inning, Matt Kriner and Dustin Geist’s two run double helped ignite the outburst.

In the Goats 14-12 deciding win over Tyler, Andy Eck belted 3 homeruns and drove in 6 runs to lead Allegheny Coatings. Jake Geer added a double.

Tyler rallied late, scoring six time in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late for the Landscapers.
