2021 Mens softball playoffs underway

The 2021 St. Marys Mens League playoffs got underway Wednesday night when the fourth seeded Allegheny Coatings Goats took to the field against the fifth seed, Tyler Landscape, at the Robin Road Softball Complex.

The Goats scored in five of the six innings they hit, taking the first game of the best of three series 13-8 over Tyler.

Allegheny Coatings (1-0) put together 16 hits in their win, with Rich Quiggle leading the way with a perfect night at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double and scoring 3 times. Justin Quiggle went 2 for 3 with a homerun and 5 RBIs. Dillon Kline was also 2 for 3, doubling twice and knocking in 4 runs. Ricky Pearsall added a 3 for 4 night and scored 4 times. Andy Eck added a double.

Leading the Landscapers (0-1) was Matt Neubert’s 4 for 5 performance that included a double. Andy Glass added a 3 for 5 evening, scoring 3 times. Nick Agosti helped the cause by punching a double to rightcenter.

The play-in between PA Powdered Metals and N&S Contractors was moved to the early game Thursday night due to a scheduling conflict.

The two teams played an unusual game for slow-pitch softball, with the final score being 3-2, more like a baseball score.

When it was all said and done, PPM took a 3-0 lead heading to the seventh and then had to hold on as N&S plated two runs and had two on base before an infield flyball ended the game with the score 3-2 in favor of PPM.

PPM scored twice in the third inning on an RBI single from Luke Hoffman and a sacrifice fly from Cory Huff and then Mitchell Struble added a solo homerun in the sixth to round out the scoring. Hoffman was 2 for 3 to lead PPM.

Rod Anderson drew a one-out walk for N&S to get things going in the top of the seventh. Dick Perroz singled with two outs to put two on. RBI singles by Jeff Crawford and Rick Beimel cut the lead to 3-2 and had runners on first and second, but a flyball to first ended the rally and the season for N&S.

PPM will now advance to the first round of the playoffs as the eighth seed and will face top seeded St. Marys Insurance.

In the other playoff game Thursday night, Carlson Technologies, seeded seventh, took a 1-0 series by upsetting second-seeded Eckert Technical Services 24-10.

With CTI leading 10-7 after six innings, the Technologists put together a 14 run, 15 hit top of the seventh inning to secure the game one win.

CTI (1-0) sent 19 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, 12 of them getting consecutive hits to start the inning. Ryan Childs, Eric Herzing, and Mick Vogt all had a pair of RBIs in the inning.

For the game, CTI was led by Steve Simchick’s huge 6 for 6 evening. Simchick scored 3 times, doubled, and knocked in 4 runs. Mike Miraglia was 4 for 5 with a double and a pair RBI and Eric Herzing pitched in with a 4 for 6 performance that included 2 RBI. Childs added a two-run dinger and Travis Menteer had a pair of doubles for the winners.

Kyler Lenox led ETS (0-1), going 3 for 4 with 5 RBI. Jared Groll was 2 for 3 with a homerun and triple and knocked in 2 runs. Josh Zelinski was a perfect 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and Justin Eckert added a double for the losers.
