N&S makes playoffs, ETS stuns Goats to even series

After winning just two games going into the last two nights of the season, N&S Contractors picked up a win in their last game of the season and then backed that up with a 10-9 win over Deprators Beverage Monday night in a play in game to determine the eighth seed in the playoffs in action this past week in the St. Marys Mens Softball League played at the Robin Road Softball Complex.

After their win over Deprators, N&S’s reward was a first round playoff matchup with top seeded St. Marys Insurance, where they lost game one of the series 12-4 on Wednesday.

This week’s schedule is as follows: Tuesday night will be the Buttonwood/East End Beverage Spuds (1-0) against Tyler Landscape (0-1) at 5:30, followed by Eckert Technical Services (1-1) taking on Allegheny Coatings (1-1) in their rubber match. On Wednesday night at 5:30 it will be St. Marys Insurance (1-0) taking on N&S Contractors (0-1). In the nightcap, Carlson Technologies (0-1) with square off with PA Powdered Metals (1-0).

In their win over Deprators, Jason Nelson scored on Scotty Johnson’s RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to put N&S up 10-9, and they held on, getting Deprators to go 1-2-3 in bottom of the inning for the win.

Matt Neubert led N&S at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with a homerun, 2 RBI’s and 4 runs scored. Jamie Neubert was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI’s and Jarrod Servidea added a double.

For Deprators, who finishes the season with a 7-18 record, Ryan Fritz was 3 for 4, Alec Wehler was 3 for 4 with a double, Gavin Elmquist 2 for 3 with a double and Austin Green was also 2 for 3.

Seventh seeded Eckert Technical forced a game three in their series against second seeded Allegheny Coatings by winning game two 14-13 after dropping the opening game of the series 12-6.

In game two Thursday night, neither team could pull away from the other, with four lead changes and three ties in their seven-inning contest.

It all culminated in the seventh inning. Trailing by one going into the top of the seventh, the Goats tied the game at 13-13. After a flyout to lead off the inning, Justin Quiggle to left. Joe Jacob reached on an infield error, putting runners at first and second. Ryan Grimm flew out to deep right, allowing Quiggle to tag and advance to third. Rich Quiggle stepped to the plate and singled to center, scoring his son to knot the game heading to the home half of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jared Groll singled with one out. Kyler Lenox drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Tyler Donachy singled to left and Groll beat the throw the plate to give ETS the 14-13 win and even the series.

Leading ETS Nick Reuscher’s 4 for 4 night that included a double and 3 RBI’s. Groll was 4 for 5, Brandon Sicheri and Tyler Donachy were both 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI’s, with one of Sicheri’s hits being a double. Justin Eckert pitched in with a double.

Rich Quiggle led the Goats, going 4 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Ricky Pearsall and Ryan Grimm were both 3 for 4. Pearsall added a pair of RBI’s to his stat line. Kevin Hoy was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI’s, Dillion Kline smacked a three-run dinger and Hank Cappiello also recorded 3 RBI’s.

In game one of the series Tuesday night, the Goats got a pair of two homeruns night from Hoy and Kline in their 12-6 win. Kline ended up 3 for 3 with 4 RBI’s and Hoy was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Rich Quiggle was 3 for 3 and Derek Meyer and Cole Peterson both added doubles.

Rich Quiggle slides safely into third Thursday night after tagging up on a fly ball to right center as the ball gets away from Josh Zelinski. Quiggle’s team, Allegheny Coatings, lost the game to Eckert Technical Services 14-13 and now will play the third and deciding game Tuesday night.

For ETS, Jared Groll and Tyler Donachy were both 3 for 4. Colby Lenox was 3 for 3 and Kyler Lenox added a double.

Wednesday night saw the fourth seeded Buttonwood/East End Beverage Honkey Spuds beat fifth seeded Tyler Landscape 8-3 and top seeded St. Marys Insurance top ninth seeded N&S 12-4.

The Spuds were led by Garrett Hornung’s 3 for 3, two homerun performance. Matt Kriner was also 3 for 3 with a homerun. Zack Austin added another dinger and Dave Burgett rapped a double.

For Tyler, Craig Kronenwetter was 2 for 3 and Jordan Weinzierl and Eric Bush both added a double.

SMI got a perfect performance from Kenny Vogt to lead them over N&S. Vogt went 4 for 4 with a homerun and 5 RBI. Lucas Wendel was 3 for 4 with a double, Rudy Gleixner hit a homerun, a triple and collected 3 RBI’s. Kurt Eckert and Nathan Liggett both went deep for the winners.

In the final first game series opener, PA Powdered Metals, the third seed, took care of business, knocking off sixth seeded Carlson Technologies 10-3.

Nick Brennen (3 for 3, double), Jared Braun (3 for 4, homerun, triple), Cory Huff (3 for 4, double) and Jack Herzing (homerun) powered PPM. PPM put the game away with a big six run fifth inning.

For CTI, Ben Thompson and Mark Schaberl both went 2 for 3. Eric Herzing smacked a double.
