With season winding down, playoff spots still up for grabs

With just six days of regular season play remaining, the top two playoff spots are set, but positions three through eight are still up for grabs in St. Marys Mens League Softball.

St. Marys Insurance secured the top seed, while Allegheny Coatings wrapped up the second seed. PA Powdered Metals currently sits third, three games ahead of the Buttonwood/East End Beverage Honkey Spuds and four games ahead of Tyler Landscape, whose nine wins has them in a race with Eckert Technical Services and Carlson Technologies as well. The last day of regular season play is next Monday, August 31.

N&S Contractors picked up their second win of the season with a 6-3 win over Deprators Beverage Wednesday night at the Robin Road Softball Complex.

Leading N&S (2-18) to victory was Hog Hoffman’s and Matt Neubert’s 2 for 3 performances. Rick Beimel added a double.

For Deprators Beverage (7-15), Tyler Wehler and Alec Wehler were both 2 for 3. Bryce O’Leary added a double.

Also Wednesday night, the Buttonwood/East End Beverage Honkey Spuds took care of Carlson Technologies 22-14.

Garrett Hornung lead the Spuds (10-11), going 3 for 5 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. Zack Austin also went 3 for 4 with a pair of homeruns and 4 RBI’s. Dustin Geist homered and doubled, Nate Ball doubled, Matt Kriner and Bobby Jack both tripled.

For CTI (9-13), Mike Miraglia homered twice and drove in 5 runs. Ben Thompson added a two-run shot, Steve Simchick tripled, and Eric Herzing, Mick Vogt and Brandon Tyger all doubled.

In action Thursday night, Eckert Technical Services beat the Buttonwood/East End Beverage 18-6 and St. Marys Insurance topped Tyler Landscape 17-9.

ETS (9-13) got a perfect night at the plate by Jared Groll to help them pick up the victory. Groll was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles. Brandon Sicheri pitched in a 3 for 4 night that included a homerun, double and 3 RBI’s. Tyler Donachy homered, and Kyler Lenox picked up 4 RBI’s.

Hornung again led the Spuds, going 2 for 3 with another homerun. Jack was 2 for 2 with a double. Ryan Breslin also doubled.

SMI secured the top seed for the playoffs with their win over Tyler. Leading SMI (21-1) was Kenny Vogt, going 3 for 4 with a homerun, double and 2 RBI’s. Rudy Gleixner was also 3 for 4, smacking a triple. Jake Cortina, Kurt Eckert, Jeremey Williams and TJ Breindel all went deep as well.

To conclude the week, Friday night ETS turned back CTI 12-10 and Allegheny Coatings beat Tyler Landscape for the second time in four days, this time 19-3.

Josh Zelinski hit a grand slam to lead ETS. Nick Reuscher also homered, doubled and drove in 3 runs. Kyle Williams was 3 for 4, Brandon Sicheri and Kyler Lenox homered, and Tyler Zelinski doubled.

For CTI, Mike Miraglia was 4 for 4 with two homeruns and 4 RBI’s. Brett Herzing was 3 for 4. Justin Saline and Mark Schaberl were 2 for 3.

Allegheny Coatings secured the second seed for the playoffs with their win over Tyler.

For the Goats, Cole Peterson, Justin Quiggle and Vince Jacob homered, Hank Cappiello tripled and Cappiello, Jacob, Ricky Pearsall and Quiggle all doubled. Jacob finished with 4 RBI’s, Peterson and Cappiello 3 RBI’s each.

Tyler was led by Craig Kronenwetter’s homerun. Andy Glass was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate for the Landscaper’s.
