SMI, Goats secure top two spots in upcoming playoffs

With their wins Tuesday night at the Robin Road Softball Complex, St. Marys Insurance and the Allegheny Coating Goats secured the top two spots in the league playoffs that will begin in two weeks in St. Marys Mens League Softball action.

SMI improved to 19-1 and Allegheny Coatings moved to 16-4. One win by SMI secures them the top seed and the Goats can fall no further than the second seed, holding on to an outside chance of the top seed if they win out and SMI loses all four of their remaining games. All other playoff spots will come down to the wire over the next two weeks of play.

Monday night, St. Marys Insurance improved to 18-1 with a 15-3 shellacking of third place PA Powdered Metals. In the early game, Carlson Technologies helped their own cause with a 9-7 win over Eckert Technical Services, moving them into sixth place, just a game out of fourth place in the jumbled standings.

Kenny Vogt led SMI, going 3 for 3 with a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Kyle Garner was 2 for 3 with a homerun, double and 3 RBI’s. Tony Chiodo added a 2 for 3 night that included a double and 3 RBI’s. Rudy Gleixner tripled, and Jeremy Williams added a double for the Insurance Men.

Leading PPM (12-8) was Jared Braun’s 2 for 2, 2 homerun, 2 RBI night. Cory Huff added a double.

In CTI’s win over ETS, Mike Miraglia and Branden Tyger both went 3 for 4. Tyger had a double and 3 RBI’s. Eric Herzing, Brett Herzing and Steve Simchick all added a pair of hits each for the winners.

ETS (7-13) was led by Jared Groll’s perfect night at the plate. Groll was 4 for 4 with a triple and 3 RBI’s. Kyler Lenox was 3 for 4 with a homerun and Tyler Donachy was also 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI’s.

SMI was in action again Tuesday night, this time turning back Eckert Technical Services 16-6 in the early game. In the late game, Allegheny Coatings routed Tyler Landscape 19-2 in five innings.

The Insurance Men were led by Nathan Liggett’s 3 for 4 night that included a homerun, a double and 5 RBI’s. Also going 3 for 4 were Rudy Gleixner, Kenny Vogt and Kurt Eckert. Vogt had a homerun and a double, Gleixner a dinger and Eckert a three-bagger. Also hit bombs were Lucas Wendel and Jake Cortina. Wendel also pitched in with 4 RBI’s.

Nathan Liggett hit a homerun, double and knocked in 5 RBI’s.

For ETS, Tyler Donachy and Brandon Sicheri were both 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI’s, with Sicheri smoking a triple. Jared Groll added a double.

In the nightcap, the Goats got a monster from Cole Peterson in their win over TLM. Peterson was 3 for 3 with 3 homeruns, one a grand slam, a sacrifice fly and 10 RBI’s. Hank Cappiello and Vince Jacob were also 3 for 3, with Cappiello knocking in a pair of runs.

Leading the way for TLM (9-10) was Andy Eck’s two run homer that accounted for both Landscape runs. Jordan Weinzierl and Craig Kronenwetter had the only other hits for TLM.
