The Allegheny Coatings Goats worked their way back through loser’s bracket on Sunday to win the St. Marys Men’s League Mid-Summer Tournament held at the Robin Road Softball Complex.
The Goats opened play Friday night with a 9-5 win over PA Powdered Metals.
Saturday morning, Allegheny Coatings had to go extra innings to get past Deprators Beverage 6-5, before falling into the loser’s bracket early in the afternoon after falling to Eckert Technical Services 18-17.
In their first game of the loser’s bracket, they beat Tyler Landscape 6-5 in the final game of the day on Saturday. To kick things off on Sunday for the Goats, got past Carlson Technologies 17-14 to earn a second shot at ETS in the loser’s bracket final. This time, Coatings prevailed 8-7 to set up a showdown with St. Marys Insurance, winner’s bracket champs. In order to win the tournament championship though, the Goats would have to beat SMI twice to win the double elimination tournament.
SMI also started their tournament on Friday night, defeating Tyler Landscape 19-0.
Then Saturday SMI knocked off Carlson Technologies 25-13 to set a winner’s bracket championship game showdown with ETS. SMI had to extra innings to pick up the 12-11 win to advance to the tournament championship.
In the first game against SMI, after both teams put up a single run in the first inning, Coatings put up 17 runs in innings three through six to take a 18-10 lead heading to the home half of the seventh inning. SMI made a run, rallying for seven runs but fell just short, losing 18-17 and setting up winner take all final game.
For the Goats, Derek Meyer finished 5 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and had a double. Ricky Pearsall was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and a triple. Cole Peterson went 3 for 4 with a homerun and 3 RBI’s. Ryan Grimm added a triple and 3 RBI.
For SMI, Rudy Gleixner was 4 for 5 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. Kenny Vogt and Tony Chiodo both finished perfect at the dish, going 4 for 4. Chiodo added 2 RBI and Vogt had a double. Lucas Wendel also doubled for the loser’s and Jeremy Williams collected 3 RBI’s.
In the championship game, Allegheny Coatings won a hard fought, defensive battle 4-3 to take home the trophy.
SMI got a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Goats tied the game at 1-1 and took the lead for good 2-1 in the fourth inning before adding two insurance runs in the sixth. Williams hit a two-run homerun with nobody out in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to one, but Allegheny Coatings was able to strand the tying run on first for the win.
Coatings finished the weekend 7-1, St. Marys Insurance went 3-2.
