Top seeded St. Marys Insurance and third seeded Allegheny Coatings both swept their way through the semifinals last week and will meet in the best of five finals of the St. Marys Mens Softball League at the Robin Road Sports Complex.
St. Marys Insurance took care of a pesky, upset minded Deprators Beverage, the fifth seed, 2-0, beating them 16-15 in nine innings and 4-3.
In the first game, SMI trailed by nine runs late in the game, rallied, then won in extras when Kiel Nissel’s single drove home Ben Cortina with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Nissel finished the game 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI’s for SMI. TJ Breindel had the hot bat offensively, going 4 of 4 with a homerun and knocking in 4 runs. Jake Cortina added a 3-run dinger for the winners.
Deprators was led by a pair of homeruns from Alec Wehler, a homerun each from Jordan Weinzierl, Austin Green and Zack Zameroski. Tyler Wehler, Garrett Bauer and Dalton Bauer all doubled in the losing effort.
In Wednesday’s 4-3 game, SMI rallied again late, picking up a pair of runs in the sixth inning, one on a solo homerun by Breindel, to erase a 3-2 Deprators lead. Deprators went 1-2-3 in each of the home halves of the sixth and seventh innings as SMI held on for the sweep and advance.
Kenny Vogt and Lucas Wendel both went 2 for 3 for SMI. Driving in the rest of the runs were Tony Chiodo, Vogt and Jake Cortina.
Allegheny Coatings got off to an easy start against second seeded Elk County Tool & DIe, beating them 22-8 on Tuesday night.
Justin Quiggle’s bat was a difference maker in game one, going 4 for 5, hitting a pair of homeruns and driving in 5 runs. Nick Brennen also finished 4 for 5, adding a homerun and 4 RBI. Derek Meyer also went deep for the Goats, while Ricky Pearsall added a triple and Dillon Kline, Cole Peterson, and Andy Eck all doubled.
For ECTD, Tyler Donachy hit a pair of homeruns, knocked in 5 runs while finishing perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3. Cory Huff added a solo homerun and Nate Schneider doubled.
The second game on Wednesday night was a lot tighter, with the Goats winning 9-8 on a walkoff throwing error to advance to the finals.
ECTD led 5-4 after three innings and 8-7 after five innings, before the Goats rallied for a run in the sixth to tie it and won it when Ryan Grimm came up with bases loaded and no one out and the speedy Cole Peterson on third. Grimm hit a shallow fly to leftcenter that was caught for the out, Peterson faked an attempt to score and the subsequent throw was wide of home plate, allowing Peterson to jog across for the win.
Ricky Pearsall, Derek Meyer, and Nick Brennen all went 3 for 4 to lead the Goats. Kevin Hoy added a 2 for 3 night and led the team with 3 RBI’s. One of Meyer’s hits was a double.
Huff homered twice and knocked in 3 runs to lead ECTD. Kyler Lenox also went deep and Garrett Hornung added a tiple for the losers.
The finals schedule will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night at 6:00 pm for games 1, 2, and 3. Games 4 and 5, if needed, could be played Thursday night.
Monday night’s opening game was won by Allegheny Coatings 9-4.
