Midsummer Classic starts Friday in Mens Softball

The St. Marys Mens League annual Midsummer Classic Softball Tournament kicks off this Friday night with three games on the slate at the Robin Road Sports Complex.

The tournament kicks off with Carlson Technologies taking on Allegheny Coatings at 5:30 in the first-round play in game. At 6:30, Tubby’s Tavern and St. Marys Insurance will square off. The final game of the night with pit Wildwoods against Dino’s Place.

Then Saturday morning, the rest of the second-round action will start at with Tyler Landscape playing Deprators Beverage at 8:00 am, then Elk County Tool & Die will play the winner of the Carlson Technologies/Allegheny Coatings game.

Games will continue all day Saturday in double elimination format, with the last game slated to begin at 2:00 pm.

Games will resume Sunday morning at 9:00 am, with the championship game to be played at 2:00 pm.

The Allegheny Coatings Goats are the defending champions, beating St. Marys Insurance in last year’s championship.

In regular season action this past week, it got started with Carlson Technologies edging Wildwoods 15-10 and Tubby’s Tavern tripling up Tyler Landscape 21-7 on Monday night.

CTI (7-5), Mike Miraglia went 3 for 4 with a homerun and 3 RBI. John Ackley and Ben Vogt were also 3 for 4, with Ackley also knocking in 3 runs and Vogt knocked in two with a double.

Mason McAllister went 3 for 4 with a homerun to lead Wildwoods (0-12). Mark Kraus also went 3 for 4 and Joe tripled.

Tubby’s (6-6) was led by a 4 for 4 night by Dustin Geist and Matt Kriner. Kriner’s night included a double. Nate Ball added a 3 for 3 game with a homerun. Dalton Ball added a pair of triples.

Jordan Weinzierl led Tyler (4-8), going 2 for 3 with a homerun and 4 RBI. Jason Nelson went 3 for 3 and Rick Beimel was 2 for 2 in the losing effort.

Tuesday night, Tyler turned around and upset St. Marys Insurance 15-10. In the late game, Allegheny Coatings ran away from Dino’s Place 24-1.

Tyler picked up the upset win in part thanks to 3 hit night by Nelson, Weinzierl and Nate Hoffman. Dalton Bauer smacked a homerun, Weinzierl tripled, and Hoffman had a double.

SMI (8-3) was led by Jake Cortina, who went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI’s. Jeremy Williams doubled and homered, and TJ Breindel added a dinger.

The Goats (7-4) got a perfect night at the dish from Nick Brennen, who went 5 for 5 with a homerun, double, and 5 RBI’s. Justin Quiggle and Cole Peterson added a 4 for 5 nights, with two of Peterson’s hits a double and a triple. Dalton Kline and Andy Eck both sent a yellow softball over the fence for the winners.

Then on Wednesday night, Deprators Beverage doubled up Carlson Technologies 10-5 and Tubby’s Tavern took care of Wildwoods 9-4.

Alec Wehler had the hot bat for the Beveragemen (7-4), going 4 for 4 with a double and a homerun. Austin Green was also 4 for 4 with a homerun.

Miraglia again led CTI, smashing two more homeruns, and driving in 4 of their 5 runs. Justin Saline and Jeff Crawford both went 2 for 3.

Tubby’s fought off an improving Wildwoods squad thanks to homeruns from Garrett Hornung and Joe Cooney. Matt Kriner and Bobby Jack were both 3 for 4.

Mark Kraus led Wildwoods, going 4 for 4 with a double. Sam Kaul double twice and Ryan doubled and tripled in the losing effort.
