With pair of wins, SMI opens two game lead in standings

St. Marys Insurance picked up a pair of wins last week, and coupled with a loss each by the three closest teams chasing them, has a two-game lead in the St. Marys Mens League standings in games played at the Robin Road Softball Complex.

St. Mary Insurance will be tested this week, playing Allegheny Coatings Monday night, the only to beat them so far, and then against a feisty Eckert Technical Services on Wednesday.

SMI, 10-1, picked up wins over PA Powdered Metals 13-5 and Tyler Landscape 12-3.

Tuesday night’s win over PPM saw Jake Cortina homer and knock in 4 runs to lead SMI. Kurt Eckert added a dinger, Rudy Gleixner and Tony Chiodo both doubled.

In Thursday’s win Tyler, Nathan Liggett homered twice, Kenny Vogt, Eckert and Jeremy Williams each once. Chiodo tripled and Kyle Garner and Ben Cortina both doubled.

Nathan Liggett hit two homeruns last week to help St. Marys Insurance solidify their hold on first place.

PPM finished the 2-1, beating the Buttonwood/East End Beverage Honkey Spuds 16-15 and Deprators Beverage 17-2 to improve to 9-3.

In PPM’s win over the Spuds, Danny Singer was a perfect 5 for 5 at the dish, which included a double. Jared Braun added a 4 for 5 performance, including a pair of doubles.

Against SMI, Cory Huff and Singer both hit solo homeruns to lead PPM. Nick Brennen and Huff both added doubles.
Friday night against Deprators, Ross Brennen went deep twice, and Braun and Huff also homered. Nick Werner added a triple.

Tyler Landscape beat Allegheny Coatings in their other game of the week, 16-15, to finish the week with an 8-3 record.

Tyler was led by homeruns by Eric Bush and Dalton Bauer against SMI.

Against the Goats, Bush homered twice, Bauer, Andy Eck and Brock Lewis each added one round-tripper. Eck also tripled, as did Jordan Weinzierl. Smacking doubles in win were Andy Glass and Bush.

Eric Bush upped his season homerun to 8 with 3 dingers in action last week.

The Honky Spuds also lost to Carlson Technologies 19-3, but did pick up a win over ETS 15-7 to complete the week with a record of 4-8.

Against PPM, Matt Kriner and Zack Austin both went deep. Dustin Geist was 4 for 4 with a double.

In the Spuds game against ETS, Austin added another homerun to his resume, while Garrett Hornung was 4 for 5 with a double. Nate Ball and Ken Meyer both smacked triples and Ball also hit a homerun late in the game for the winner.

The Spuds final game of the week was Friday against CTI, with Jamer Cooney going perfect at the plate, 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Allegheny Coatings split their two games for the week, beating Deprators Beverage 11-4 to put the finishing on a 10-3 at the end of the week.

In the Goats loss to Tyler Landscape, Derek Meyer homered twice and Dillon Kline, Kevin Hoy and Cole Peterson all also went yard. Meyer finished with 5 RBI’s on the night. Ricky Pearsall added a double.

Against Deprators, Meyer and Hoy both added another homerun to their season totals, and both knocked in 3 runs each. Ryan Grimm and Justin Quiggle each doubled in the victory.

Deprators Beverage was another team playing a three-game week, going 2-1, and they now stand at 3-11 on the year. Their win came against Carlson Technologies 12-11.

Deprators was led by Matt Bellina’s homerun in their win over CTI. Ryan Fritz was 3 for 4 with a double. Gavin Elmquist was also 3 for 4 with a double and adding triples were Wade Steis and Dan Wimer.

Leading Deprators in their game against the Goats Nate Dezanet, who hit a solo bomb. Tyler Wehler and Brady Schneider both smacked doubles.

Against PPM, Wimer had an RBI triple and Scott Wehler adding an RBI single to account for both Deprators runs.
Carlson Technologies sits at 5-8 on the year after their 1-1 week.

In CTI’s win over the Spuds, Mike Miraglia smashed two homeruns, one a grand slam, and ended the night knocking in 7 runs. Eric Herzing was 3 for 4 and Steve Simchick finished the night 4 for 5. Brandon Tyger smoked a two-run dinger and Mick Vogt added a two-run double as part of a 3 for 3 night.

Mike Miraglia lead the league in homeruns (10) and batting average (.707) as of 7/24/2020.

Leading CTI against Deprators was Miraglia again, this time with a three-run shot. Miraglia has the league lead in homeruns with 10 after completion of games on Friday. Miraglia finished 4 for 4 at the plate, putting his season batting average at .707, which is also a league best. Tyger was 3 for 4 with a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Mark Schaberl and Vogt were each 2 for 3.

Eckert Technical Services was also 1-1 last week, putting them at 5-7 on the year.

ETS was led by Jared Groll’s 2 for 4 night that included a double and 3 RBI’s in their 7-2 win over N&S Contractors. Kyler Lenox doubled twice, and DJ Salinas was 2 for 3.

In ETS’s loss to the Spuds, Justin Eckert led the way at the plate, going 3 for with a double. Josh Zelinski hit a double and knocked in 2 runs. Kyler Lenox also had 2 RBI’s and Bryan Hansen was 2 for 3.

N&S Contractors just had the lone game against ETS, a 7-2 loss, leaving them with at 1-11 for the season so far.
Scott Johnson, Jamie Neubert and Jeff Carlson were all 2 for 3 to lead N&S.
