Goats open finals with 14-3 win

The Allegheny Coatings Goats opened the 2019 St. Marys Mens League Championship finals with a 14-3 win over St. Marys Insurance Tuesday night at the Robin Road Extension Softball Complex in front of a packed crowd.

The Goats, looking for their second title in three years, fell behind 2-0 heading into the home half of the second inning. SMI’s Kurt Eckert smacked a two-run homerun in the top of the inning to give Insurance the lead.

Rich Quiggle led off the second inning with a double and moved to third on a single by winning pitcher Ryan Grimm. Hank Cappiello’s single scored Quiggle and moved Grimm to third. Cappiello advanced to second on the throw. After a Joe Jacob walk to load the bases, Ricky Pearsall singled to center, scoring Grimm and Cappiello to make it 3-2. Derek Meyer singled to score Pearsall and Dillon Kline homered to left to make it 7-2 after two innings of play.

The Goats extended their lead to 11-2 in the fourth thanks to RBI singles by Pearsall and Meyer and a two-run double by Kline.

SMI added a run in the top of the sixth, but Allegheny Coatings answered with a two-run dinger by Kline and a solo shot by Justin Quiggle to make the final 14-3.

Pearsall and Grimm both went 3 for 3 to lead the Goats, who lead the best of five series 1-0. Pearsall added 3 RBI’s. Kline ended the night 3 for 4 with two homeruns, a double and 7 RBI’s. Meyer and Rich Quiggle added 2 hits each and Justin Quiggle homered for the winners.
